Baan Unrak, Thailand

Located along the Thai-Myamar border, the Sangkhlaburi region has been afflicted with high unemployment, overwhelming health problems, and a constant influx of refugees and immigrants fleeing war and forced slavery in Burma. In 1991, Baan Unrak, or the “House of Joy”, opened its doors to destitute orphans and single mothers seeking shelter and care. Since then, the project has become home to over 110 abandoned children. The center also provides needed relief and medical services to the surrounding community.

In 1993, Baan Unrak initiated a weaving center for mothers who had been abandoned by their husbands and could not support their children. The center produces scarves, textiles and ready-to-wear clothing. The income from the sale of these products helps them achieve self-sufficiency.

The main objectives of Baan Unrak are:

  • Support single mothers with employment and food
  • Give a loving home to orphans and abandoned children
  • Provide education for children who are unable to attend school
  • Organize relief programs in villages and refugee camps
  • Offer medical services through a mobile medical unit
  • Teach preventative health classes to women and children

“Some mothers that intended to give their children away changed their mind while they were staying with us. Following their stay here they are prepared to face hardship for the sake of their child.”
