Health education classes for adults in Sabana Grande

Eco-Stove Project: WWD-F has been working together with Prolena and the US NGO, Trees, Water, and Plants to offer eco-stoves to the local residents of Sabana Grande, Nicaragua. Staff from WWD-F has organized informational sessions that explain how these eco-stoves improve health, save money, and help the environment. These fuel-efficient, wood-burning stoves help reduce deforestation by burning wood more efficiently and improve the quality of a family’s health by removing toxic smoke from the kitchen through the use of chimneys. As the families in the area are extremely poor, the program subsidizes these stoves so that the people can afford them.

HIV/AIDS Training: Staff from WWD-F’s clinic have received training in Human Rights and HIV/AIDS and are presenting the material to professionals in the community. They have designed a 3-day workshop and have trained medical staff from the government-run Health Center as well as teachers from local Elementary and Secondary schools on the topic. Due to the success of these workshops, other schools in the area are requesting to participate in one. WWD-F is also planning to develop a presentation of the material directly to local students, utilizing artistic accompaniments by student drama groups.

“The poor in Nicaragua cannot afford to get sick. There is no scheme to support those suffering from chronic illnesses; they just go hungry if they are unable to work.”
