Abha Light, Kenya
In Kenya, a combination of poverty, residential overcrowding, inadequate sanitation and hygiene, and expensive medical care have contributed to a health crisis. In 1988, with the aim of providing accessible medical care, the Abha Light Foundation was established in Nairobi to promote homeopathic medicine. Aside from being more affordable, homeopathy is a natural treatment that does not produce the harmful side effects of conventional drugs. As such, it can be extremely useful for people who are unable to afford health care or who lack transportation to clinics. In places where a doctor is a two-day walk, a simple self-help kit can become a lifeline.
For the last 18 years, Abha Light has been providing Kenyans with medical assistance through its health clinics and outreach. Recently, the foundation has opened the Abha Light College, a unique educational facility that offers degrees in alternative medicine.
Accomplishments of the Abha Light clinics include:
- 3,000 patients treated each year
- Training local people in homeopathy
- Mobile clinics providing health care in rural areas
- HIV community outreach and behavior change programs
- HIV counseling, testing and emotional support programs
- Home-based health care programs
- Food distribution in slum areas
